Septorhinoplasty London Functional Nose & Deviated Septum Surgery

Our septorhinoplasty service is led by function, restoring clear breathing and stable structure after a deviated septum or nasal injury, with natural balance preserved.
Medically Reviewed by Mr Taimur Shoaib, FRCS (Plast), GMC No. 3615443 | Last Updated: 05 June 2026.

Breathing First
A Functional Approach To Nose Surgery

Septorhinoplasty is functional nose surgery. It corrects a deviated or damaged septum and rebuilds the nasal framework so you can breathe properly, while restoring a straight, balanced shape after injury. Unlike a cosmetic nose job, the priority here is airway and structure, not just appearance, although the two are corrected together in the same operation.

A deviated septum is the most common reason people cannot breathe freely through the nose. It may be congenital, or very often the result of trauma: a knock in rugby or football, a fall, or repeated impact in boxing and MMA. It causes persistent blockage, uneven airflow, snoring, disturbed sleep and breathlessness on exertion. Mr Taimur Shoaib, FRCS (Plast), a consultant plastic surgeon at 64 Harley Street, treats the full range of septal deviation, from mild congenital cases to complex post-traumatic and revision noses where the bone and cartilage have been broken or previously operated on.

Goals In Functional Septorhinoplasty

FUNCTIONAL GOALS – Restoring The Airway

Septum: Straighten the deviated or displaced septum to open both airways.

Nasal valves: Support weak or collapsed valves that close on breathing in.

Airflow: Restore even, unobstructed breathing through the nose.

Symptoms: Resolve blockage, snoring and breathlessness during exercise.

STRUCTURAL GOALS – Rebuilding After Injury

Framework: Reconstruct bone and cartilage broken or collapsed by trauma.

Profile: Straighten a crooked, post-traumatic nose for a balanced line.

Stability: Reinforce support so the correction lasts and resists re-injury.

Balance: Preserve natural shape while function is the priority.

Common Concerns:

In Functional Septorhinoplasty

A clinical evaluation of the septum, the airway and any injury to the nasal framework.

The Deviated Septum
A bent or off-centre septum is the central problem in most functional cases. Straightening and repositioning it is the foundation of the operation and what reopens the airway.
Post-Traumatic & Sports Injuries
Boxing, MMA, rugby, football and accidents frequently break the nasal bones and twist the septum. We rebuild the framework and correct the deviation that the injury left behind.
Nasal Valve Collapse
Weak internal or external valves that flutter or close on inhaling are a common, often-missed cause of blockage. They are reinforced with the patient’s own cartilage grafts.
Breathing, Snoring & Exercise
Persistent blockage, mouth-breathing, snoring and breathlessness during sport are the day-to-day symptoms a functional septorhinoplasty is designed to resolve.

The Clinical Goals of Functional Septorhinoplasty
Surgical Objectives

The aim of a functional septorhinoplasty is a nose that breathes clearly and stays stable for life, particularly where injury has damaged the framework. Our clinical approach treats the airway and the structure as one problem, correcting the septum, supporting the valves and rebuilding bone and cartilage in a single operation.

Septal Correction & Airway Restoration
The central goal is to straighten the deviated septum and reopen both airways. Where the septum is severely bent or damaged from trauma, cartilage is repositioned and reinforced rather than simply removed, protecting long-term support and breathing.
Nasal Valve Support
Many breathing failures are caused by weak or collapsed internal and external valves, not the septum alone. Structural grafts, often spreader or alar grafts from the patient’s own cartilage, hold the airway open on inhaling.
Reconstruction After Trauma
For post-traumatic and sports-injury noses, fractured bones and collapsed cartilage are rebuilt and the framework realigned, correcting both the breathing and the crooked, deviated profile the injury left behind.
Stable, Lasting Function
Aesthetic beauty must never come at the expense of breathing. Every step prioritises a structurally sound nose that resists re-deviation, so the functional result holds over time, including for patients returning to contact sport.

    Frequently Asked Questions About Septorhinoplasty

    What is septorhinoplasty?
Septorhinoplasty is functional nose surgery that combines septoplasty (straightening the septum) with reshaping of the nasal framework. It corrects breathing problems caused by a deviated septum or injury, while restoring a straight, stable structure, in one operation.
    Is septorhinoplasty functional or cosmetic?
It is primarily functional. The priority is your airway and the structure of your nose, particularly after injury. Because the same framework controls both breathing and shape, appearance is corrected at the same time, but the procedure is chosen for function, not as a cosmetic nose job.
I cannot breathe properly after a sports injury or a broken nose. Can this help?
Yes. A blow to the nose in boxing, MMA, rugby or an accident commonly deviates the septum and fractures the bones, leaving long-term blockage. Septorhinoplasty realigns the septum, rebuilds collapsed cartilage and reopens the airway, and straightens a nose that has healed crooked.
How long after surgery can I return to contact sport?
Light activity is usually resumed within 7 to 10 days. Contact and combat sports, where the nose could be struck, are avoided for around 8 to 12 weeks to protect the repair while the bone and cartilage heal.
    What is a deviated septum?
The septum is the wall of bone and cartilage that divides the two nostrils. When it is bent or off-centre, congenitally or from trauma, it narrows one or both airways and causes blockage, snoring and breathlessness. It is the most common functional reason for septorhinoplasty.
What is the difference between septoplasty, rhinoplasty and septorhinoplasty?
Septoplasty straightens the septum only (function). Rhinoplasty reshapes the external nose (usually cosmetic). Septorhinoplasty does both: it corrects the septum and the airway AND rebuilds the framework, which is why it suits deviated, injured or previously-operated noses.
