Septoplasty vs Rhinoplasty: What’s the Difference?

Medically reviewed by Mr Taimur Shoaib, FRCS (Plast) — Consultant Plastic Surgeon, GMC No. 3615443 · Last reviewed: 4 June 2026

Rhinoplasty is often confused with septoplasty, but they solve different problems. Septoplasty is functional surgery to straighten a deviated septum and improve breathing. Rhinoplasty reshapes the appearance of the nose. When a patient needs both — better breathing and a refined shape — the combined operation is called a septorhinoplasty.

What septoplasty does

The septum is the wall of cartilage and bone dividing the two nostrils. When it is deviated (crooked), it can block airflow, cause congestion, disturb sleep and reduce exercise tolerance. Septoplasty straightens it to restore clear breathing. On its own, it is not designed to change how the nose looks.

What rhinoplasty does

Rhinoplasty alters the external shape — reducing a hump, refining the tip, straightening the profile or improving symmetry. It is chosen for aesthetic goals, though it can also address some structural issues.

Septorhinoplasty: when you need both

Many people who dislike the look of their nose also have a breathing problem — the two often go together, especially after injury. Septorhinoplasty corrects function and form in a single operation and recovery, which is usually more efficient than having them done separately. At Berkeley Square Medical, septorhinoplasty is performed by Mr Taimur Shoaib as day-case surgery.

How do I know which I need?

If your concern is purely breathing, septoplasty may be enough. If it is purely appearance, rhinoplasty. If it is both, septorhinoplasty. This is assessed at consultation, where Mr Shoaib examines the inside and outside of your nose and advises honestly. See our rhinoplasty cost guide for pricing, or the recovery timeline.

Frequently asked questions

Is septoplasty the same as rhinoplasty?

No. Septoplasty straightens a deviated septum to improve breathing; rhinoplasty reshapes the nose’s appearance. They can be combined as a septorhinoplasty.

What is a septorhinoplasty?

A combined operation that straightens the septum to improve breathing and reshapes the external nose at the same time — correcting both function and appearance in one procedure.

Will rhinoplasty fix my breathing?

Standard cosmetic rhinoplasty focuses on appearance. If you have a breathing problem from a deviated septum, you need septoplasty or a septorhinoplasty. Your surgeon will assess this at consultation.

Is septorhinoplasty more expensive than rhinoplasty?

At Berkeley Square Medical, septorhinoplasty is a fixed price — see our rhinoplasty cost guide for current pricing of each procedure.
