Nasal Packing After Rhinoplasty

Nasal Packing After Rhinoplasty

What is Nasal Packing?

Nasal packing after rhinoplasty is sterile cotton gauze that is inserted into both nostrils after the completion of a Rhinoplasty.

The purpose of the packing is to absorb bleeding together with any solution used during your Rhinoplasty.

One of the most generally commented aspects of Rhinoplasty recovery that patients mention is their nasal packing and they find this the single most discomforting factor of their recovery.

Nasal packing after Rhinoplasty causes discomfort as it blocks the nasal passage causing congestion after surgery and this naturally means patients will have to breathe through their mouth until the packing is completely removed.

Our Rhinoplasty Surgeons at Berkeley Square Medical remove all nasal packing approximately 4 hours after surgery for a pain free recovery.

Many Rhinoplasty surgeons to date use nasal packing after Rhinoplasty, but in most cases, the packing is left for the full 7 days after surgery until you return for your first post-operative check-up and splint removal.

The Disadvantages:

The disadvantages to nasal packing being left for 7 days can include:

  • Difficulty breathing through your nose for extended periods.
  • Increase the risk of Infection in some cases.
  • A more painful post-operative appointment to remove if left for the full 7 days of your recovery process.
  • Increase the chances of blood clotting during recovery.

The Advantages:

The Advantages of having the Best Rhinoplasty Surgeon London has to offer, our Nasal Packing Methods at Berkeley Square Medical are quite unique, and in virtually all Rhinoplasty cases, our surgeon will be administering local anaesthesia before applying the internal nasal packing and removing the nasal packing before you are discharged from our hospital.

This means the packing is inserted while you are asleep under General anaesthesia and can be taken out absolutely pain-free after 4 hours after surgery while the local anaesthesia is still effective.

By handling your nasal tissues exceedingly carefully and gently during your Rhinoplasty procedure, we find that we can best keep bleeding, bruising, and swelling to an absolute minimum.

This all means we avoid all disadvantages mentioned above with the use of nasal packing, where patients can breathe through their noses immediately on being discharged from the hospital and can look forward to a pain-free post-operative assessment after 7 days.
