In short, rhinoplasty reshapes the outside of the nose for appearance, while septoplasty straightens the wall inside the nose to improve breathing. Some people need one, some need the other, and some need both at once, which is called a septorhinoplasty. What is the difference between rhinoplasty and septoplasty?

The simplest way to remember it: rhinoplasty is exterior work, septoplasty is interior work.

• Rhinoplasty changes the shape and appearance of the nose, the bridge, tip, width or profile. It is usually chosen for cosmetic reasons, though it can also correct the outer nose after injury.
• Septoplasty corrects a deviated septum, the bent cartilage and bone dividing the two nostrils, which can block one or both sides of your breathing. It does not aim to change how the nose looks.
• Septorhinoplasty combines the two in one operation, straightening the septum for breathing while reshaping the outside for appearance.

Which one do I need?

A simple guide, which your surgeon will confirm:

• Unhappy with how your nose looks, breathing fine: rhinoplasty is likely the right operation.
• Struggling to breathe through your nose, happy with the look: septoplasty is likely what you need, especially if a deviated septum has been mentioned.
• Both bothered by the look and blocked when breathing: a septorhinoplasty addresses both in one operation and one recovery.

It is worth being clear on one point: septoplasty alone will not change the outside shape of your nose, and rhinoplasty alone is not primarily a breathing operation. If you want both, say so, so the plan is right from the start.

Can rhinoplasty and septoplasty be done together?

Yes. When the septum needs straightening for breathing and the outside needs reshaping for appearance, both are done in a single operation called a septorhinoplasty. Combining them means one anaesthetic and one recovery rather than two, and it is a very common approach when function and appearance both need attention.

Does the NHS cover septoplasty or septorhinoplasty?

Broadly, the functional part can be NHS-eligible while the cosmetic part is not. A septoplasty for a genuinely obstructed airway may be funded on the NHS, whereas reshaping the nose for appearance is considered cosmetic and is not. Does septoplasty change the shape of my nose?

Usually no. A straightforward septoplasty works inside the nose to straighten the septum and is not designed to alter the external shape, so most people look much the same afterwards. If your nose is visibly crooked because of the deviation and you also want it straightened on the outside, that is where a septorhinoplasty, rather than septoplasty alone, comes in.

Recovery and cost: how they differ

In brief, a septoplasty tends to involve internal healing with less outward bruising, while a rhinoplasty or septorhinoplasty involves a splint, external swelling and bruising, with the final shape settling over months.
