Year after year breast Enlargement consistently remains the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure in the UK and US with more than 310,000 being performed last year in both countries combined. For women where breast augmentation surgery is not cost driven, they are able to select from over 700 different implants which are not ordinarily offered to women having breast surgery at a cheaper cost.
The FDA (USA) last year approved the sale of Mentor’s CPG form stable breast implants . This brings the number of manufacturers allowed to sell form stable implants in the UK to two, the other being Allergan. Here at Berkeley Square Medical, we offer our patients the full 700+ implants available by both Mentor and Allergan.
The goal was not to lose the natural shape of the breast after surgery by designing implants to look like a tear drop, thicker at the bottom and tapered towards the top. To maintain this natural shape, the silicone gel in the implant is more firmer than the gel found in a normal round implant. As apart of the clinical testing of the product, even when the implant was cut into half, it still retained its normal shape. These types of implants are generally referred to as ‘gummy bear implants’.
These type of stable implants offer an additional option for women desiring breast augmentation surgery who are specific to retaining the natural shape of the breast after surgery.
However, as with all medical implants, they have advantages and disadvantages. Before choosing your implant, our Surgeon will discuss the potential risks and benefits of each implant. Remember that one type of implant does not fit all and to achieve what looks right for you requires consideration to all implants at your disposal.
One of the advantages of form stable implants is that they match the shape of the natural breast, giving more fullness to the bottom of the breast. Comprised of a stiffer gel, less wrinkling of the implant is anticipated, and some women desire that additional firmness of the implant. Finally, because they are all textured, there is some evidence to suggest that the patient’s risk of developing a capsular contracture around the implant could be lessened by as much as 69%.
Disadvantages include potential rotation of the implant in which case the thicker part of the implant can distort the breast’s shape. Because the gel is thicker, a slightly longer incision to insert them is often necessary. Thought the insertion of the implant is more often under the breast, the scar is still hidden in the natural crease of the breast.
If you are considering Breast Augmentation, your consultation with our Surgeon assesses in more detail each implant available and the pros and cons of all. The fact there are over 700 different implants to choose from may sound like a daunting task, however our surgeon will assist you in what is right for you to achieve to look you are aspiring to.
